Ready for the Yeti? DreamWorks Animation has released the first teaser trailer and poster for Abominable, which is coming to a theater near you this fall. The animated comedy adventure follows a young girl and her snow loving Bigfoot as they set off on an incredible journey across the globe to discover the true meaning of family. You can find your own way on September 27.
Big. Bigger. Abominable. DreamWorks Animation has shared their newest 3D Comedy-Adventure in theaters this September, from the creators of the blockbuster franchise How to Train Your Dragon. DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s co-production Abominable takes audiences on an epic 2,000-mile adventure from the streets of Shanghai to the breathtaking Himalayan snowscapes.
When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth.
But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.
Abominable is written and directed by Jill Culton (Open Season, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2) and is produced by Suzanne Buirgy (Kung Fu Panda 2, Home). Peilin Chou of Pearl Studio also produces. The film is executive produced by Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Home, ANTZ), Frank Zhu (Checked In, Lotus Code) and Li Ruigang (Kung Fu Panda 3, The Taking of Tiger Mountain) and is co-directed by Todd Wilderman (Trolls, The Croods).
Abominable will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide beginning September 27, 2019. In China, the film will be distributed by Pearl. The ensemble cast includes Chloe Bennet, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Albert Tsai, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Tsai Chin and Michelle Wong.
If this trailer feels a little familiar, like you’ve seen it before, its because competing animation studios have released their own take on Bigfoot here in the past couple of months. Which often happens with big studio movies. They always say the first one is most successful. Warner Bros. released Smallfoot almost one year to the day of Abominable‘s release in theaters. It arrived September 28, 2018. It has a fresh rating of 76% and an audience rating of 63%. The movie was a modest hit at the box office, pulling in $83.2 million domestic while going onto earn $214.1 million worldwide.
Next came Missing Link, a stop-motion animated adventure from Laika Studios and Annapurna Pictures, which had a similar yet slightly different take on the Bigfoot mythos. It fared slightly better with critics, garnering an 89% fresh rating. Audiences only liked it slightly more than Smallfoot with a 68% precent rating. However, perhaps feelings Yeti fatigue, not many turned out for the critical darling, which was released April 12 of this year. Thus far, it has only made $16.4 million domestic, with no international release numbers to speak of.
Missing Link at leased looked a little different than Smallfoot. Abominable has gone for the same white haired Sasquatch, which may end up hurting it at the box office this September.
