Antebellum Trailer: Janelle Monae Can’t Be Saved in Mysterious Horror Movie

Surprise! Award-winning actress and musician Janelle Monae is starring in a horror movie, and we have the trailer to prove it. Lionsgate surprised just about everyone today when they revealed a trailer for a mysterious new movie called Antebellum. The high-concept horror flick comes with a stacked cast, and was produced by the people behind Get Out and Us, which only adds to the intrigue. Not to mention that this is one heck of a teaser.

The teaser itself is a little tough to get a grip on, as it’s not cleanly laying out the story. We start out with audio of a 911 call, which is played over a woman running through a field being chased by men on horseback, which looks to be taking place in the American South back during the days before the Civil War. Janelle Monae looks on in silent surprise as this unfolds in front of her. We then cut to the modern world, which also features a character played by Monae. Is this the same person? There are plenty of intriguing shots, such as one with a creepy girl in a hallway, which is reminiscent of The Shining. The trailer also features the following tagline.

“If it chooses you, nothing can save you.”

Antebellum, per the movie’s brief synopsis, centers on Veronica Henley (Janelle Monae) who “finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.” Admittedly, that doesn’t give us much to work with, but it’s clear the filmmakers fully intended to keep the nature of this project secretive. While it’s not totally clear which producers associated with Get Out and Us are involved, the movie is directed by filmmaking duo Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, known as Bush+Renz.

Previously, the duo directed several national ad campaigns, as well as Kill Jay-Z for the rapper’s 4:44 release. So we can’t even look to any of their previous feature work to gain a better understanding of what we might be in for with this one. As for Janelle Monae, aside from her very successful music career, she’s starred in movies such as Hidden Figures, which went on to score a Best Picture Oscar nomination, as well as Welcome to Marwen and this year’s Harriet. Monae also has voiced characters in Rio 2, UglyDolls and the live-action Lady and the Tramp remake.

Aside from the trailer, the studio also released three versions of the same poster, in red, black and white, which all feature a bleeding butterfly and little else, save for the title and the tagline. The rest of the cast includes Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles and Jena Malone. Antebellum is set to hit theaters on April 24, 2020, from Lionsgate. Be sure to check out the new trailer and posters for yourself.
